Volary

Town on the one-time Golden Route, first mentioned 1359. It has remarkable timber-frame houses of the Alpine type, which is typical of the adjacent German side of the Šumava mountains. Most of the Volary houses date from the 18th century. The originally late Gothic curch if St. Catherine was replaced by a baroque sanctuary in the late 17th century.
